Categorizing a page
You can add an article to a category by adding , where Name is the name of the category, any where in the article. It is standard practice to add category tags at the end of the article.
An article can have more than one category. This can be achieved by adding multiple category tags to a page.
Creating a subcategory
A category becomes a subcategory when it has a category tag. It becomes the child of the category that it belongs to. There is no limit to the number of subcategories in a category and the number of levels of categories.
The root category is Category:Browse.
Sort keys
All articles in a category are sorted alphabetically. If you want an article to be sorted by something other than its name, you should add a sort key.
The following syntax should be used: , where Name is the name of the article and Sort key is the value to sort the list by.
For example, the article Char Aznable will be listed under character "G", because it is the first letter of the article's name. You could instead force the article to be listed by the character's last name by using the string .
Sort keys are case sensitive. Capital letters will be sorted before lowercase letters.
If the article is to be sorted according to the page name, you can use use the page name variable PAGENAME as the sort key.
For example, .
Linking to a category
Note that any category tag in an article will place the article in the tag. This means that if you try to use to link to a category, the link will not show up. Instead, the article will be added to the category "Name".
Add a colon {:) before the word "Category" to link to a category instead of adding the article to the category.
For example, :Category:Name
Conventions
These are some conventions you should follow when categorizing articles.
- Character names should always be sorted by the last name.
- For example, Char Aznable will be sorted as Aznable, Char.
- For categories that lists articles such as Category:Code Geass characters, articles that are catalogues of a certain type of article should categorized with an asterisk. These articles will appear at the beginning of the list.
- For example, List of Code Geass characters should be categorized using .
- Category tags are to be placed at the end of articles.
- Do not place articles in redundant category.
- For example, Kira Yamato should be placed under Category:Gundam SEED characters and Category:Gundam SEED Destiny characters, instead of Category:Cosmic Era articles. Both Category:Gundam SEED characters and Category:Gundam SEED Destiny characters are in the Category:Cosmic Era articles category.
