Help:Edit summary

From MechaBay
Jump to: navigation, search

The edit summary feature provides a concise explanation of the changes made in an edit to update other contributors to the particular article.

Contents

Adding a summary

When editing an article on MechBay, you will notice a field called "Summary" under the text box. You can enter up to 200 characters in this field. State the type of change made and, where necessary, explain why the change was made. This is to inform other contributors about the changes made, especially for those who are following the particular article. Longer explanations should go on the talk pages of the articles.

Where a summary appears

The text will appear in italics on the Recent changes page and in the edit history of the aricle.

Always add a summary

It is important and polite to provide an edit summary for every edit you make. A summary helps others to decide if they should read all the changes that were made in your edit, or if it is not important enough for their attention. There are a few automatically generated summaries. However, it is easier for you to use simple abbreviations to indicate the type of change.
