Topics

The #mechabay IRC channel is intended for chatting about MechaBay. The topic is MechaBay. It is not a general-purpose mecha discussion channel. You may want to visit #mecha for general discussion about the mecha genre. Off-topic discussion is generally allowed unless there is an event going on.

Rules

These are the rules that you should observe while using #mechabay:

  • Be nice. Others might irritate you but if you do not irritate others, they are less likely to do so.
  • Do not complain. When you are asking about or for something but do not get the desired answer, do not whine about it. You can be persistent but in a mature manner.
  • Use proper English. You are expected to communicate in English. Abbreviations are fine but netspeak will not be tolerated.
  • Do not spam. Do not repeat yourself just so that no one is responding to you.
  • Avoid subjects on real-world politics and religion. Unless the other parties agree to talk about them, drop the subject.

Sanctions

Users who violate the IRC rules will be dealt with:

  • Warning — Any minor offence will merit a warning by a channel operator to act as a reminder.
  • Kicking — Abuse, spamming, trolling and repeated offences will results in the user being kicked from the channel.
  • Muting — The violator will be muted and restricted from participating in the chat. The operator may specify a duration on the mute.
  • Banning — When a violator constantly disrupts the channel and refuse to change despite being given the chances, they will be permanently banned from the channel.

Using the IRC

Using an IRC client

You can either access the chat via your web browser or using a specialized IRC chat client.

Web client

  • Mibbit] allows you to chat in IRC channels using your web browser. In the IRC dropdown menu, look for Darkmyst[webirc]. Enter your username as your nick and #mechabay as the channel. Click go and you will be brought to the channel.

Windows

  • mIRC is the classic Windows IRC client. The main drawbacks of mIRC are the fact that it's not free and that the configuration options are more extensive than a lot of users are used to. (Only partial UTF-8 support - see below)
  • Trillian handles IRC. It's a little complicated to set up, but if you don't want to use the very easy CGI:IRC linked by Angela, then Trillian is a handy program to have anyway for the other things it does. (No UTF-8 support - see below)
  • Miranda IM - a multi-client, like Trillian, but rather minimalist and open source. (UTF-8 support requires patching - see below)

Linux

  • Pidgin is a multi-client that comes preinstalled with Ubuntu and several other Linux distributions.
  • Kopete is a multi-client, the KDE counterpart of Gaim.
  • Konversation is a KDE application with interface similar to X-Chat; it is an IRC-only client.

Mac

  • Snak handles IRC rather nicely, and is one of the few Mac-only clients that still work flawlessly.
  • X-Chat Aqua is a full featured IRC client for OS X that is easy to setup and use.

Crossplatform

  • Opera web browser has a built-in IRC client.
  • ChatZilla is an extension for the Mozilla Firefox web browser.
  • JWChat - had some script errors in Firefox, but clicked "Stop script" and it worked fine after that.
  • X-Chat is perhaps the most well-known IRC client for Linux, included into nearly every distribution, which has recently grown in popularity on Windows as well. Note that the official Windows version (as opposed to Linux) is shareware, but unofficial free Windows builds are available, for example, here.

Setup instructions

To log in, you need to configure your client. After you log in, it is rather straightforward. The parameters are:

  • Server: irc.darkmyst.org
  • Channel: #mechabay

Your web browser may be preconfigured to open IRC links in some IRC client, so you can try clicking this link:
